Synesthesia and Double Stops Played on the Violin
|
Image © Alison Whalen
|
This painting is an example of the textures and colors I see when I play a double stop on my violin with an A flat on the G string and an open D string behind it.
Played on the G string, A flat is a dark cranberry color mixed with traces of shimmering forest green which reflect the color of the G string.
The open D string, which is chocolate brown in color, produces overtones that swirl around and enfold the cranberry and forest green like a dense layer of smoke.
This particular double-stop includes the second lowest note playable within the range of the violin, and its texture is very sculptural; thick and malleable, like warm clay.
