Stitched together into a rainbow landscape, upcountry Maui is one of the island's largest agricultural regions. With chilly, foggy mornings and evenings, the climate here is very similar to the area where I live in northern California. The cooler temperatures at this elevation provide perfect growing conditions for proteas and many other flowers used in lei making. There's a large lavender farm in Kula, and lots of small vegetable farms where the famous sweet Kula onions are grown.
When you need a break from the tropical heat, grab a jacket and head upcountry for the cool breezes and radiant sunsets.
